Gravity Energy Storage Systems (GESS) are an emerging form of mechanical energy storage that store and release energy by raising and lowering a heavy mass using gravity. When excess electricity is available (e.g., from renewable sources), the system uses it to lift a massive weight vertically or along an incline. When power is needed, the weight is lowered, driving a generator to produce electricity — much like pumped hydro, but without the need for water or elevation.
GESS offer key benefits such as long cycle life, rapid response times, low environmental impact, and the ability to be deployed in flat or urban areas where other large-scale storage options may not be feasible. They are particularly suited for grid balancing, renewable integration, and energy arbitrage.
With the increasing dependence on renewable energy such as wind and solar energy, solving the uncertainty and indirectness of its production has become a key issue that cannot be ignored. In order to be able to achieve uninterrupted power supply, Energy Vault first developed a gravity energy storage system, which has better performance and lower costs than pumped water storage and lithium battery storage.
Gravity energy storage systems are very suitable for large-scale energy storage such as public utilities, especially suitable for more remote areas.
